The Guardians of the Cedars issued the following communiqué

We had no intention of getting into a duel with anyone, were it not for the slander and calumny campaigns aimed at us from all sides. Suffice it to make a few brief and selected responses:

We were surprised by Mr. Nassib Lahoud's joining the band of slanderers without taking a moment to check what happened at the press conference and the circumstances that surrounded it. If his goal is to sweet-talk others in his reaching for the Presidency, he has chosen the wrong approach and is far from the equanimity and sobriety we have grown accustomed to seeing from him.

On the other hand, we were not surprised by the posturing of Mr. Michel Eddeh who is ever the one seeking a ministerial post no matter how low and base his approach is in getting there. No one will forget his famous line, “I will throw myself in front of the Syrian tanks if Syria decides to withdraw from Lebanon,” and our reply to him is: we wished he had done that so as to rid Lebanon of one of the most prominent political clown in this country.

As to Mr. Karim Pakradouni, our former colleague in the Lebanese Front, we don't know if his political treachery entitles him to deserve an appropriate response from us. Neither do we know if his Armenian origins makes him eligible to belong to Arab Nationalism with all the artificial enthusiasm he displays in that regard without recalling his shuttling trips to Israel during the days of Sheikh Bashir Gemayel and Dr. Samir Geagea.

And to those who accused us of participating in the massacres of Sabra and Shatila, we assure them, with all courage and confidence, that we had nothing whatsoever to do with that massacre. All that we said at the time was that this massacre was a Lebanese reaction to the massacres perpetrated by the Palestinians in Damour, Shekka, Aiyshiyyeh and others... Not only are we ready to refute anyone's claim to any shred of evidence against us, but we stand ready to bear the responsibility publicly and in the eyes of the world if it is confirmed that we were involved in that massacre.

Enough lies and slander, Gentlemen, against a group of people who never believed in anything but God and Lebanon, and who not once ever stained its hands with innocent blood... And God is witness to our word.

Lebanon, at your service
